I would bet that a bunch of you had a New Year’s resolution of being healthier. One of the easiest ways to do so is to take a multivitamin and minerals tablet each day. I do not care if you are 8, 18, or 81 years old, it just makes sense to do so. Now I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV but I have had the opportunity to talk with many recently along with researchers and scientists in cancer research and they all say you should take something in addition to a healthy diet. Even if you have the best diet the chances are you are not getting enough of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs on a daily basis. It was interesting to learn how small doses on a daily basis of some of the most common vitamins and minerals will help to prevent forms of cancer, heart related aliments, and things like blindness in old age. Women who are trying to get pregnant, or recently are, by taken vitamins can all put insure that a few common birth defects will not be there for the child. Like anything else however remember that there can be too much of a good thing. Very, very large doses do not help at all. There is only so much that your body can absorb at one time. The rest just passes through your system for no benefit or gain. Also remember and I am sure that many women know this, that some things just do not mix; for example Iron and Calcium should not be taken at the same time as this is counterintuitive to the body and really when you take them should be staggered in a day. If you notice I have been saying vitamins and minerals because both are important to take. A vitamin supplement that does not include minerals is really a waste of your time. In another blog entry (because MSN spaces seems to have lame limits on how much text you can include) I have included the makeup of the one I take daily. I also show that the formula has changed over time. As scientists do more research they find what the right balances should be. Speaking of a healthier New Year I really would be remiss if I did not say anything about good fats. Along with your vitamins and minerals you really should be taking an Omega-3 dosage. Omega-3 is an amazing little fat that is great for things like your heart. You can find it in certain fish like salmon or in flax seed. These are the good fats; the EPA and DHA fatty acids. Unless you eating this type of thing every day you also need to take an Omega-3 supplement. The tablets I use are slow release but they still need to be staggered throughout the day. I take a dosage in the morning and one with dinner. As for the vitamins and minerals the long release tablet I take is only once a day. One thing to think about in your table is that is there and what is not there. Mine is free of sugar, salt, starch, preservatives, artificial colors, and flavors. Why take a tablet that is full of extra calories?
