I never wrote about the last two home games for the Huskies when they played the Bay Area schools. On Thursday night I was a bit nervous about the game against Stanford. The Huskies had lost 15 of the last 19 times against Stanford. Mike Jenson had great night hitting six three point shots as the #19 Huskies went on to beat Stanford 75-57. The Dawg Pack really got to Chris Hernandez even having flip signs saying they were in his head and he only had 9 points. Brandon Roy led all scores with 23 in the win. It was a good win considering that down at Stanford the UW gave up the win by causing a three point foul that took the game to OT.
Sunday 2/26 in came California. It was senior day with four seniors; Brandon Roy, Jamaal Williams, Mike Jensen, and Zane Potter. The talk before the game was who would do better? Leon Powe or Brandon Roy. Roy had a great second half in a game with a ton of fouls and charges collected by the Dawgs and the UW won 73-62 with Roy getting 27 and Powe only 14. After the game Coach Romar ask all of the seniors in the Dawg Pack to join the team on the floor which I thought was really cool. The Dawg Pack had been named the 8th best student section in the country for basketball by Sports Illustrated about a week earlier and it was great to bring them out for the last game.
As an aside it was great to see the UW sweep the Arizona schools on the road. Also Brandon Roy was named the Pac-10 player of the year and Jon Brockman and Justin Dentmon were named to the Pac-10 Freshman team. Washington ends the season in second place in the Pac-10. The Huskies next play the winner of the Oregon vs. Washington State game on Thursday in the Pac-10 tourney hoping to defend their tournament title from last year.
