Friday night I was at the M’s game when they played the Tigers (it was the Girl’s night out game and this year they got a blue visor). The Tigers are on a roll and I was worried about the M’s chances because Peniero (6-8) has had some control problems. He had a shaky first inning with a bunch of balls and he was down 1-0 after the first to Bonderman (8-4) a Tri-cities native. After the first he settled down and threw a lot of strikes and forced the Tiger players to put the ball in play. Unfortunately the M’s were very poor at getting hits or even getting guys on base. After five innings the M’s had three total hits and they were down 2-0. Peniero when seven and two thirds and gave up six runs. I have to believe he would have been pulled before the eight when he gave up three runs if the game was closer. After Mateo we got to see Matt Lowe pitch for the M’s. This was his first start in the bigs having come up from AA. The kid was a bit shaky and gave up two hits. He did get out of a one out bases loaded situation striking out the last two guys. Bonderman went into the ninth with a shutout but he finally gave up a run. Zumaya came in and while the guy looks like he does not have a lot of control boy can he throw hard. The gun was at 99 and 100 mph. Final score 6-1 for the Tigers.
At this point Sexson is batting .223. Everett is at .234. Ichiro is at .347. Choo is making contact but he is batting .091. With the loss the M’s fall to 42-45 for the year. That is 3.5 games behind OAK in the West but still in third place.
I was lucky enough to sit in the diamond club for the game and the best reason for sitting there was that my dad was the honorary grounds keeper for the game as part of the crew. I got some great pictures of him working on the field.
