Microsoft mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and JV

It is has been about 5 months since I last blogged about mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures by Microsoft.  Here is the up to date list of those actions and where the company’s IP/tech/people look to fit into the company.
 
aQuantive, Inc. in 2007.  Internet advertising and tools including Atlas, DRIVEpm, and Avenue A | Razorfish.
SoftArtisans’ OfficeWriter in 2007.  IP and people will join the SQL Reporting Services tea.  The OfficeWriter tech will be licensed back to SoftArtisans.
ScreenTonic SA in 2007.  Mobile advertiser in Europe.  Tech will be used in MSN/Windows Live.
devBiz Business Solutions in 2007.  ISV for Visual Studio.  User of the Visual Studio Team System (Team Foundation Server) will get a web interface called TeamPlain.
Tellme Networks, Inc. in 2007. Voice services and voice-enabled moblie search.  Tech will be used in MBD and mobile groups.
Medstory in 2007. Search software for health and medical information in government and medical journals and on the net.  Used by their healthcare solutions (vertical) group.
Secured Dimensions in 2007.  Software to support software provisioning and licensing.
Colloquis Inc. in 2006.  Natural language processing that can be used in IM for customer service.
DesktopStandard Corporation in 2006.  Group Policy-based enterprise desktop management products (GPOVault, PolicyMaker Standard Edition, Software Update, Registry Extension, and Share Manager).
Gteko Ltd in 2006.  PC services and support technology based out of Isreal.
Azyxxi in 2006.  Health intelligence software to be used with an alliance with MedStar Health to help in their new healthcare solutions vertical group.
  • Wininternals Software LP in 2006.  Freeware tool Sysinternals IP and people (Mark Russinovich — technical fellow in Platforms & Services, Bryce Cogswell — software architect Windows Component Platform) for use in Systems division.
  • iView Group Ltd. in 2006.  Digital asset management for Win and Mac. iView MedioPro is their main product.
  • Softricity Inc. in 2006.  Streaming and application virtualization tech.
  • Whale Communications Ltd in 2006.  Secure access products including VPN and SSL.  The tech will go into ISA Server and Windows Server VPN.
  • Vexcel Corp. in 2006.  Remote sensing, imagery, and photogrammety tech to go into the Virtual Earth technologies.
  • Massive Inc. in 2006.  In game advertising tech to go into Xbox and MSN Zone games.
  • DeepMetrix in 2006.  BI company that tracks web visit stats. Their LiveStats tech will go into MSN via adCenter and other websites.
  • AssetMetrix in 2006.  Asset and license management solutions to go into most likely SMS.
  • Wallop Inc. in 2006.  This is a spin-off via their Microsoft IP Ventures program and in this case it was social networking IP.
  • Lionhead Studios in 2006.  Xbox and PC games.
  • ProClarity in 2006.  Business Intelligence client and server software to be merged into IW efforts like Sharepoint and Excel.
  • Onfolio Inc. in 2006.  Technology integrated into the Windows Live toolbar to collect data online along with web clipping and a bloging authoring package.
  • Apptimum Inc. in 2006.  Technology to transfer customers applications to new computers to be use in Vista.
  • WinTarget tech in 2006.  From String Bean Software the Windows server team acquired the WinTarget technology for iSCSI storage area networking solutions.
  • MotionBridge SA in 2006.  Moblie search to be added to MSN search.
  • Seadragon in 2006.  People and IP to join MSN in image visualization — Photosynth project.
  • FutureSoft in 2006.  DynaComm i:filter for helping with Web server accesss management.  It has rich integration with the Microsoft ISA server product.
  • GeoTango Inc. in 2005.  Mapping and local search framework that will be merged with the MSN team’s work.
  • UMT in 2005.  IP and software for portfolio management that complements the Microsoft Project Server product.
  • FolderShare service from ByteTaxi Inc. in 2005.  File sync and remote access technology to be used by MSN team as part of Windows Live (and I bet in their messenger product).
  • media-streams.com AG in 2005.  VoIP technology, IP, and people.  This will be used in the Office RTC platform and in Office Live Communication Server.
  • Unveil Technologies in 2005.  IP and people working on the Adaptive Learning & Conversation Assit components of their Conversation suite to be put in future versions of the MSFT Speach Server.
  • Alacris Inc. in 2005. Smartcard tech to be used in security and Windows deployement.
  • Teleo Inc. in 2005.  VoIP software most likely to be used in MSN Messenger or Live Comunicator.
  • Frontbridge Technologies Inc. in 2005.  Managed services that help address corporate e-mail compliance, security and availability requirements that will part of the Exchange group.
  • Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd. (SAIL)/TSSX in 2005.  JV in China that launches MSN China.
  • Groove Networks Inc. in 2005.  The IW group will most likely integrate this with the Office System.
  • Sybari Software Inc. in 2005.  Virus scanning software mostly for email most likely to be integrated into Exchange server.
  • Sells Xbox sports games to Ubisoft Entertainment SA in 2005.
  • Sells Slate.com to Washington Post in 2004.
  • GIANT Company in 2004.  AntiSpyware already in beta.
  • Sells Xbox indie games studio to Take Two in 2004. (Effectively selling Access software acquired in 1999.)
  • Lookout software LLC in 2004.  Cool search tool for Outlook but I believe this search technology is being used in their MSN group for their desktop search.
  • ActiveViews Inc in 2004.  A small business intelligence platform company.
  • Encore Business Solutions in 2004.  Software that works with MBS GreatPlains.
  • Divested PWA Group (Empower software) – part of MBS to Northgate Information Solutions in 2003.

  • Vicinity in 2002.  Mapping software used by the MapPoint team.
  • Rare in 2002.  Great games for the Xbox.

  • Navision in 2002.  MBS software, bigger in Europe than US.
